January 3, 2012
The day started off in snowy Ohio with a twelve degree temperature when departing the airport via plane. Both, from Columbus to Dallas & Dallas to Belize, plane rides were large planes with at least two seats in one row and three in the adjacent row. The flights were smooth and running ahead of schedule.
During the flight I was able to meditate on a song that I heard on the way to the airport. During my fund-raising for the trip I always heard this song and it was such an inspiration that I was following God's plan for me and my January, even when it did not seem possible that I would be able to. Hearing this song reminded me of how God had a plan for this trip and it was all in His timing. The song title is unknown but it says “Sing until the whole world hears,” “I wanna be your hands and be your feet, I'll go where you send me.” To me, this trip is definitely letting me sing until the whole world hears and I'm going where I feel He sent me.
The day ended with dinner at Cheers Restaurant where I ordered a Cheese Quesidilla. Dinner was really good and not as “different” than I thought it was going to be. After dinner we headed to the campground we will be staying at until Saturday and unpacked all of our bedding, hung our mosquito nets, and brushed our teeth using bottled water.
Throughout the day, I was continuously contemplating what this trip was going to be like and how I would be able to impact the people of Belize. At this point it is very unfamiliar what the trip will be like and especially since we have had very minimal contact with the people of Belize.
I have not yet observed or formed any thoughts on poverty, families, justice, friendship, happiness, materialism, technology, Christianity, defining self, etc. In interacting with Belizians more, I will be able to formulate and discover the culture and such characteristics better and have a more complete and full understanding.
Personally, I have seen that there is poverty in Belize, but there is also the opposite end of the spectrum, great wealth. I have not had the opportunity to have discussions with the people of Belize about poverty or their viewpoints about poverty.
In conclusion, the day was very tiring, complete with much time spent on the plane and waiting for transportation. The day was filled with many unknowns and many opportunities to be open to what the rest of the trip is going to be like. I cannot wait to see what else God has in store for me and the rest of January.
